MEET OUR JACOB
TODAY’S MIRACLE
Have you ever noticed how many times in the Bible God put people in impossible situations? He put people in seemingly hopeless situations and then came to the rescue in the nick of time.
When you are in the midst of a storm and all you’ve got is a prayer, God has you right where He wants you.
In my SS class two weeks ago we mentioned as many last second miracles in the Bible as we could think of:
- Peter walking on the water
- Jesus calming the sea
- Elijah and the widow of Zarephath
- Elisha and the widow’s oil in II Kings 4
- the Philipian jailer
- Moses at the Red Sea
- Esther
- Daniel (he knew what a lion’s breath smelled like)
- the 3 Hebrew children
- the thief on the cross
In some cases, things really looked grim:
- Jairus’ daughter
- Lazarus
- the widow’s son at Zarephath
Each of the above were raised from the dead.
Our family currently finds our backs against the wall. Rachael and David’s(“V” as our camp people know him) two and a half year old son, Jacob, has a rare vascular disease. Blue Rubber Bleb Nevus Syndrome (BRBNS) has a worldwide registry of 60 patients. As of now there is no cure, only treatment options to improve his quality of life.
I’m thankful for the folks at Boston Children’s Hospital where the motto is “Until Every Child Is Well”. We’re thankful for doctors and nurses who are looking constantly for better treatment options and searching for answers. But we need a miracle. We need God to show up.
At first I tried denial. Maybe it’s not that bad. Surely they can “fix Jake”. As reality set in the old fear and doubt came back as I heard about Jacob’s serious situation. Focusing on fears and worrying about the unknown leads to depression. Because I can’t fix this problem – I can’t make the hurt go away. Having a hurting grandchild is worse than if one of your kids is sick. You feel twice as helpless.
I understand how Gideon felt in Judges 6. After being told the Lord is with thee, you mighty man of valor, Gideon asks a few questions:
- If you are with us, why then has all of this befallen us?
- Where are all those miracles we heard about?
- Didn’t you deliver us from Egypt?
- Have you forsaken us and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites?
The Midianites had an army so big that both Judges 6:5 and 7:12 say you couldn’t even count them – sand by the sea. Bible scholars estimate the army of Midian at between 120,000 and 135,000. They also had innumerable camels. Camels could carry huge amounts of crops up to 400 miles without food or water. The Midianites stole Israel’s crops and livestock. Israel took to hiding in caves from this awesome force.
At first, Gideon focused on his abilities and his resources. He was the little brother from a poor family. He didn’t go to West Point. He didn’t know military strategy.
REMEMBER:
WHEN YOU FACE A HUGE TRIAL OR DIFFICULTY IT’S NOT ABOUT YOUR RESOURCES OR ABILITIES.
IT’S ALWAYS ABOUT GOD’S RESOURCES AND HIS FAITHFULNESS!
(Stay tuned for more on Gideon… and Jake.)
