Last Saturday we had a Sunday School meeting. We talked about a lot of principles that could apply to coaching as well.
Here are a few:
- Leadership is a huge responsibility. Coaches have a lot of influence and should use every opportunity to teach players that serving others is a great privilege/responsibility.
- Repetition is crucial for learning. When you are sick of repeating something your players are probably starting to get it.
- Coaches need to be challenged, stretched, developed and led. (just like players. Who’s mentoring you?)
- For Teams to grow, coaches need to grow.
- Am I teaching clearly, enthusiastically, practically and accurately?
- Are there opportunities for feedback and questions?
- Are people my priority? They won’t remember your lessons. They will remember the relationships.
- Every person has a story. Do you know their story? If they know they matter to their coach they will run through a brick wall for you.
- Don’t assume everyone knows your terminology. Teach them. Don’t ask do you understand? They will always say yes. They don’t want you to think they aren’t smart. Have them teach you to demonstrate they understand.
- The reason people burn out is they forget why they do what they do.
You do it:
- For the Lord. You are using your gifts.
- For the Kids. (If it’s all about my resume, legacy, getting a higher visibility job, etc… My motives are wrong.)
Please share with others and comment so we can hear your ideas.
